How To Help
The SafeRide program is always looking for volunteers. Each Friday and Saturday night, Safe Rides is staffed with an Adult, a Receiver, a Dispatcher, and one driving team - each with a Navigator and Driver. Each Driver - Navigator team needs to have one male and one female. The job descriptions and requirements are as follows:
- Receiver – Answers the phone and takes down called information. Requirements: High School Student (no license needed).
- Dispatcher – Keeps track of cars and their destinations. Relays information to Navigator and helps the Receivers. Requirements: High School Student (no license needed).
- Navigator – Rides “shot-gun” and helps the driver reach their destination. Fills out needed information and calls the base when necessary. Requirements: High School student with a driver’s license.
- Driver – Drives safely. A vehicle and gas are provided. Requirements: High School student who has had a driver’s license for at least six months and is a safe driver.
- Adult Supervisor – Acts as a general supervisor and provides assistance but does not answer the phone or pickup riders. Requirements: Needs to be 25 or older. Background checks are required.
- Volunteer Scheduling: Schedules are sent via 1st class mail and reminder postcards are usually sent a few days before a shift to the volunteers for a particular night. Members are encouraged to alert the scheduler to conflicts two months in advance to avoid being scheduled.
Teams are asked to commit to one shift a month which would be four hours long. Shifts are from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. All participants must go through a two hour orientation prior to being "on duty." All participants are covered under liability and accident insurance through the Boy Scouts of America Venturing Program. While waiting for calls students remain in the call center doing homework eating snacks or watching a movie.
Switching shifts with other volunteers is acceptable. If a volunteer is scheduled to work Safe Rides, it is their responsibility to show up for their shift or find a substitute. All exchanges, substitutions, or changes to the schedule should be reported by both parties to the number given at the bottom of the schedule and to the adult supervisors affected.
